Supermarket Royale – Dev Blog Post 2

It’s been a while since I made a post but I thought now was a good time to show more of what has been created in our game. This one will be a much larger post as there was stuff I didn’t include in the first one which I will now include here as more work has been done to the game.

Starting with the Main Menu. This has gone through a few changes. Initially, it was just a bland static menu but I decided to incorporate the UI into the level. When you get to the character select screen, when you select a character, they will roll on the conveyor belt where the player can also move the character if they so wish to (this may change).

Next is the Overworld. This is the main hub where you will move from level to level once you beat a level. It is still being worked on and there will be many changes to it but it works as intended for now. At the moment, we are working on an art style for it which is why some textures and models may look odd and out of place.

In this video, the player moves over the level which brings up a little image and name of what the level is. Also, when the player leaves that radius by the level, the shop disappears into the floor. This is just a small detail but it gives more life to the world which Oliver created.

Here, in this video, I am showing off the day and night cycle in the overworld. It also shows the lights turning on and off when the sun comes up and down.

There is music for the overworld however I turned it off in the video. All this music might change as we go on but for now this is what I made for the overworld. I gave it a mysterious vibe which I didn’t intend for but we both began to get attached too.

This is the level complete screen. Quite simple and it might change later if we come up with something better.

Once you beat a level, the next level unlocks and you get a little crown symbol to show you beat it.

This is the first boss of the game. It has three phases and is randomised. The only way for the player to win is to avoid the attacks till the boss defeats itself. The can rolling has a sound effect which will get changed as it is very loud and annoying to listen to but I wanted to display that we have added audio into the game as well as some music which I have created.

If you would like to listen to the music with no other sounds in the background then here is that theme. I made this myself and I think it didn’t turn out too bad.

Levels

Here I will go through each level that has been made so far and their mechanics. I won’t go too in detail as there are videos for each level showing what each mechanic is.

Dump Level

In this level, a lever changes the direction of the conveyor belt to try and catch the player off guard.

Sawmill Level

In this level, there are sawblades that come up out of the conveyor belt which cut the wood logs in half. These can then get cut in half again.

Factory Level

There are pressure plates that come down to crush the player and objects. They have a timer and are randomised as to when they come down.

Underwater Level

There are waves that come crashing across the conveyor belt.

Plant Boss

This is the latest boss I have created so far. In this boss, the player has to avoid vines, a charge attack, a splat attack and a log attack. For the player to beat the boss, they must use the levers to change the direction of the conveyor belt for the logs to rebound onto the boss.

And this is what we have so far. I know this post was a long one but there was a lot that was new so I had to show everything. I’m quite proud of what we have so far and I am excited to see this fully complete.
